The Benefits of Preserving a Habitat for Animals in a Garden Space

Preserving a habitat means making an area sustainable for animals and wildlife to live, you are making space available for wildlife to be able to move in and make this space their home. When we take away an animal’s habitat, we take away all the resources that these animals use in order to live, driving them away from our area.

When we drive creatures away from an area, the place becomes unhealthy as it reduces the capability of the natural processes used to recycle natural waste such as animal matter, leaves, and plant matter, and also clean up
pollutants.

This is called the reduction of biodiversity, which is the richness of an ecosystems different species making this area their home.

There are many actions that people can take in order to preserve biodiversity and provide habitat. These actions may include using flowers, native trees, and shrubs in suburban and urban landscaping.

When you preserve a habitat in your garden area, you not only create a one of a kind garden but also invite creatures of different species and families to come and live there making your very own habitat in your back yard.

Planting

By planting shrubs, making rain gardens, planting native trees, and leaving some areas slightly overgrown, these can enhance the ability of a person’s yard to filter rainfall through the clean soil and make fresh groundwater for the animals to drink from.

Also if you have the perfect wooded area, preserving or planting woodland and removing any invasive species, can help maintain the habitat that protects all of the wildlife in it.

Preserving

If you can find the time to preserve or even create an area with native trees and plants, you not only provide a water source, but you also supply nesting and shelter opportunities for moths, birds, butterflies, and even agriculture.

With the creation of your own backyard habitat, you are helping your local vegetable gardens and farmers by drawing the attention of animals to your habitat instead of feasting upon the farmer’s gardens.

Creating

Creating a back yard habitat doesn't have to be a one man thing, in fact it is more fun when you can gather a group of friends, colleagues, or even your neighborhood or community together and work on this as a team project.

If you combine your efforts with the people around you, you may be able to create a wider and more natural habitat that provides improved ecosystem services and esthetics.

Living

Keep in mind when you are preserving a part of your land for a habitat, what kind of habitat you want to preserve. With careful consideration and planning you can obtain an area that provides living arrangements and food sources for all types of animals and insects.

You can find information about the habitats most suitable for certain species of animals in the book “The Woods in Your Backyard”.

It's never too late to start preserving land for wildlife and sooner or later you will be glad that you did when you look out your window and see all the animals gathering and “thanking” you for this space by making it their home.
