"One of the most-significant influences in my life was Eleanor Roosevelt, the former First Lady. When I was 11 years old and living in Brooklyn it was decided I was too energetic for the public school system so I was sent to Wlityck School for Boys in New Jersey. The school was run by Eleanor Roosevelt who worked extensively in helping inner-city youth. Mrs. Roosevelt immediately took me under her wing and I lived with her in the Roosevelt home. It was there I began to learn about gardens as I would help her tend her gardens. I lived with her from the age of 11 years old until I was 16. Nothing has effected my life more than this lady and this time of my life." |
